Hong Kong may be compact, but this densely packed international city has an incredible variety of places to stay, from luxury hotels to budget guesthouses.
If you’re exploring the city on your own, a convenient location can matter more than a bigger room. Stay near the MTR, Hong Kong’s subway system, with restaurants and shops close by, and you’ll save plenty of time getting around.
I’ve rounded up 4 popular areas to help you decide where to stay in Hong Kong, each with something different to offer—from spectacular skyline views to local food right outside your door. Let’s find the one that suits your trip!
Space comes at a premium in Hong Kong, but these three tips will help you stay close to the sights without stretching your budget:
1. Choose a hotel less than a 10-minute walk from an MTR station. You’ll be able to reach the main attractions quickly and keep transportation costs down.
2. Look for a safe neighborhood with restaurants, shops, and everyday essentials nearby. It’s reassuring to have an easy walk back at night, with somewhere to eat or pick up anything you need just downstairs.
3. Focus on the main tourist areas on both sides of the harbor: Central–Admiralty–Wan Chai/Causeway Bay on Hong Kong Island, and Tsim Sha Tsui–Mong Kok–Kowloon Station in Kowloon. Many of the city’s must-see attractions are in or close to these areas.
✅ 3 Best Areas to Stay in Hong Kong for Tourists
🌆 Tsim Sha Tsui & Kowloon Station
Kowloon’s sightseeing and shopping hub sits beside Victoria Harbour, making it one of the best places to enjoy Hong Kong’s iconic evening skyline. Major shopping spots include K11 MUSEA, Harbour City, and ELEMENTS, with the Avenue of Stars another highlight of the waterfront.
Getting around is easy, too: Tsim Sha Tsui and East Tsim Sha Tsui stations connect you to the wider MTR network, while Kowloon Station has the Airport Express and direct service to Hong Kong Station in Central.
For anyone wondering where to stay in Hong Kong as a first-time visitor, this is the best area.
🏙️ Central & Admiralty
Hong Kong’s financial and business heart also puts you close to the Peak Tram, Lan Kwai Fong’s nightlife, and Man Mo Temple. Skyscrapers stand alongside colonial-era buildings, giving the area a distinctive mix of old and new.
Central and Admiralty are major MTR interchange stations, making travel around the city especially convenient. With plenty of five-star hotels and a safe, well-established setting, these neighborhoods particularly suit business travelers and visitors who appreciate an upscale hotel experience.
🏬 Causeway Bay & Wan Chai
Shopping and food are the big draws here. Causeway Bay is home to Times Square, SOGO, and Lee Gardens, while Wan Chai brings together older neighborhood streets and the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Restaurants, stores, and everyday conveniences are never far away.
Both neighborhoods are served by the MTR Island Line, with an extensive bus and minibus network offering more ways to get around. There’s a wide selection of hotels, from luxury properties to midrange stays. With its generally safe surroundings and plenty to do, this area works especially well for shoppers, food lovers, and convention visitors.
Other Recommended Areas to Stay
🌃 Mong Kok & Yau Ma Tei
These neighborhoods stay lively long after dark and are full of local character. Langham Place, Ladies’ Market, and Temple Street Night Market are among the area’s familiar stops, offering a taste of Hong Kong’s everyday street life.
Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei, and Jordan stations sit along the Tsuen Wan Line, with direct trains to Tsim Sha Tsui and Central. Main roads and the streets around shopping malls are generally safe. I recommend choosing a hotel near an MTR exit or on a main road. The area is particularly popular with younger travelers, backpackers, and visitors on a tighter budget.
😼 Cathead’s Tips
💡 Hong Kong is generally a very safe city compared with many major cities. That said, some side streets in Sham Shui Po, Mong Kok, and Yau Ma Tei, along with back alleys in Tsim Sha Tsui, can feel less comfortable at night. I wouldn’t recommend wandering through these lanes late in the evening or choosing a hotel hidden down a particularly secluded street.
By comparison, main streets such as Nathan Road, Argyle Street, and Granville Road are well lit and have more people around, making them generally reassuring places to walk.
💡 When choosing a hotel, look for one on a main street, next to a shopping mall, or near other major hotels. A convenient, easy-to-find entrance makes returning after dinner much more comfortable.
Front-row views of Victoria Harbour, plenty of shopping and dining, and easy access to Harbour City, K11 MUSEA, and the Avenue of Stars. Kowloon Station adds the convenience of a direct Airport Express connection.
Best for:
✔️ First-time visitors: Enjoy skyline views, shopping, and sightseeing from a convenient base.
✔️ Luxury travelers: Choose from some of the best hotels in Hong Kong, including The Ritz-Carlton, Rosewood, The Peninsula, and Regent.
✔ ️ Shopping lovers: Spend the day browsing Harbour City or ELEMENTS, then head to the waterfront for A Symphony of Lights in the evening.

Hotel ICON was established and supported by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University as a teaching and research hotel. The design is stylish, the service is consistently good, and the rooms are spacious and comfortable, with open views that add to the sense of space. All of that makes it particularly good value for an upscale stay in Hong Kong.
😼 Cathead’s Tip:
Try to fit in a meal at The Market, and book several weeks ahead! This buffet restaurant is a favorite with locals, especially for its seasonal seafood and durian desserts. I’ve been here several times and I’ve never been disappointed. The ingredients are fresh, the dishes are prepared with care, and the service is good, too—there’s a reason I keep going back.

W Hong Kong is a five-star design hotel with a bold mix of fashion, art, and energy. It sits above Kowloon MTR Station, with ELEMENTS shopping mall downstairs and a direct Airport Express connection—a handy setup when you’re arriving with luggage or heading back to the airport.
The rooms take a modern approach to luxury, pairing vivid colors with contemporary artwork. Some rooms on higher floors also have sweeping views of Victoria Harbour.
One of the hotel’s biggest attractions is its 76th-floor rooftop infinity pool, with a sky-high bar adding to the appeal. It’s a popular spot for photos, and the hotel also has a spa, a gym, and several restaurants and bars, each with its own personality. The atmosphere is lively, making it especially appealing to style-conscious travelers who enjoy a little nightlife.
😼 Cathead’s Tip:
The gym is on the 73rd floor, and the views of Victoria Harbour and the city make quite a backdrop for a workout. I also loved how the rooftop pool looked, though it was a little smaller than I’d hoped and felt crowded with so many guests using it. The changing rooms were beautifully designed and very clean, with impressive city views of their own.

Conrad is one of Hilton’s luxury brands, and its Hong Kong hotel is known for understated elegance and thoughtful service. Set above Pacific Place in Admiralty, it brings upscale shopping and a major MTR interchange right to your doorstep. If you like having shopping, dining, and transportation in one place, the location is hard to beat.
Rooms pair warm colors and wood finishes with an elegant, contemporary look. They’re spacious and well soundproofed, with higher floors overlooking Victoria Harbour or Victoria Peak. Some suites take in both the city and harbor. The hotel also has several respected fine-dining restaurants, including Golden Leaf, the one-Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant. Business travelers, couples, and guests who value a polished hotel experience will find plenty to like here.
😼 Cathead’s Tip:
On a previous visit, I stayed in a mountain-view room overlooking Victoria Peak and the luxury homes dotted across the hillsides. The scenery was just as beautiful as the harbor views.
The decor was a little dated and the ceilings were on the low side, but there was plenty of space to spread out, and the large windows gave the room an open, welcoming feel. The service was excellent, too.

Part of Accor’s budget-friendly ibis brand, this hotel is known for clean rooms, consistent standards, and good value. Its location in Sheung Wan puts you close to both the MTR and Hong Kong’s famous double-decker trams, or “ding dings.” It’s a popular option for travelers looking for affordable Hong Kong hotels in a convenient neighborhood.
The rooms are simple and compact, with the essentials neatly arranged in the practical style ibis is known for. Higher floors also offer harbor-view rooms, looking across Victoria Harbour toward Kowloon’s evening skyline—a nice find at this price point.
Tram and bus stops are right nearby, and you can explore the sights of Central and Sheung Wan on foot, including Central and Lan Kwai Fong farther along the way. Cafes and Cha Chaan Tengs, Hong Kong’s casual local diners, are plentiful in the surrounding streets. If your priorities are price, location, and reliable service, this hotel covers the basics well.
😼 Cathead’s Tip:
Most rooms are about 183 square feet. If you’d like more space, family rooms are roughly twice the size at 366 square feet. Before booking, though, compare rates at other hotels for your dates—you might be able to stay somewhere more upscale for the same price.
